How Does the Season Change Affect My Skin?
Seasonal changes wreck havoc on your skin! Just as you think you’ve nailed your skincare routine, you suddenly find you’re experiencing a new skincare concern, but do not fear! We’re going to take a look at how the seasonal changes can affect your skin, and how to overcome the challenges that come with the changing weather.
From Summer into Autumn
Autumn is a funny season as the weather can be so unpredictable, one moment you’re head to toe in a winter coat and scarf and the next you are running around in just a T-shirt. Eventually throughout autumn, temperatures will drop and humidity will decrease. These changing conditions can make it really difficult for your skin to adapt, plus with the central heating turning on and showers getting warmer you’ll find your skin is getting dehydrated.
For autumn we recommend focusing on exfoliating dry skin to aid cell growth, Medik8 Pore Refining Scrub is the perfect natural exfoliator to decongest and tighten pores. You’ll also want to incorporate a good dose of hydration into your skincare regime and don’t forget you still need an SPF even on overcast days!

From Autumn into Winter
Winter is perhaps the most difficult season for your skin to adapt to as there are drastic changes between indoors and outdoors conditions. Between dropping humidity, freezing temperatures, cold winds and your central heating on full power - your poor skin can’t keep up!
All this change leaves your skin extremely dehydrated and sensitive and not just your face! All your skin, especially hands and other extremities will feel very dry and in need of a nourishing body cream. As if your skin didn’t have enough to cope with, you may also find your skin appears lacklustre due to a drop in Vitamin D.
For winter our biggest recommendations are to keep your skin well hydrated with an intense moistener and to swap to sensitive products to help sore skin to recover. Medik8 Calmwise Soothing Cleanser has been formulated to be gentle on skin while the antioxidant ingredients green chlorphull and Vitamin K help to improve skin health.
From Winter into Spring
Spring is another transitional season like autumn, where you will find the increasing levels of sun exposure and adapting levels of humidity and temperature can impact your skin. Just like with autumn, you can’t rely on the weather in spring - we’ve seen both heatwaves and snowstorms in previous years.
For Spring we feel it is best to focus on lightweight products to prevent clogging your skin while it adapts to this changing season. For a lightweight serum, the bestselling Medik8 Hydr8 B5 is perfect as it is fragrance and oil free while providing long-lasting hydration. For a complete spring clean, use an exfoliator to clear away any dry and dull skin from winter and the increase in sun exposure will require an increase in your SPF usage too.
From Spring into Summer
Although you may feel more confident in your skin with a tan, you may find the increase exposure to sun (and therefore sweat!) can cause seasonal breakouts in summer, if this resonates with you then we recommend the Medik8 Blemish SOS. The summer season usually results in increased time outdoors and time in UV rays which contribute to cell damage and ageing skin. Both sweat and sebum production increases with the warmer months, which can lead to clogged pores and irritated skin.
Your focus for summer should be SPF. Protecting your skin from high UV exposure won’t always help with any immediate breakouts, but future you will thank you for it when you’ve prevented damaged skin and fine lines. SPF in your existing products won’t be enough protection, which is why we always recommend you incorporate dedicated SPF product into your skincare regime, like the Medik8 Physical Sunscreen SPF50. To help with any summer skincare complaints, steer clear of heavy and oil products that may clog your pores and ensure your skin stays hydrated.
